President Trump spent years working to delegitimize President Obama by claiming that he was not a US citizen.
In fact, it was not until September of 2016 that he finally, and in a half-hearted manner, admitted he was wrong.
By spreading such completely unsubstantiated lies, Trump the private citizen weakened our country by suggesting that a sitting president was not our legitimate leader.
My, how the tables have turned.
Intelligence agencies have conclusively concluded that Russia intervened in the 2016 presidential election and that the goal was to aid Donald J. Trump.
Admiral Michael Rogers, head of the NSA, has said, “This was a conscious effort by a nation-state to attempt to achieve a specific effect. This was not something that was done casually. This was not something that was done by chance. This was not a target that was selected purely arbitrarily.”
Pretty much sums it up, don’t you think?
Call me crazy, but if a foreign country is at least partially responsible for your election you are well on the path to being delegitimized.
And, it deserves to be pointed out that the Russian intervention is neither rumors nor innuendo, but a cold hard fact.
Trump is delegitimized in another way and he has found a lie for that, too.
He lost the popular vote by nearly three million ballots, a circumstance he is most unhappy about.
Last night, according to NYT, “Mr. Trump asserted that between three million and five million unauthorized immigrants voted for Mrs. Clinton.”
There is no evidence to support his false claim and we are left with the uncomfortable conclusion that he must invent a lie when the facts won’t do.
It’s deeply ironic that having spent years trying to call into question the legitimacy of President Obama that he enters office without legitimacy in point and in fact.
Since legitimacy, at least in this case, is conferred by voters, he could conceivably achieve it were he willing to make the sacrifice.
The sacrifice is equal parts honesty and contrition along with the willingness to genuinely embrace all Americans in a true spirit of unity.
It will never happen and we are left to ponder a country led by a narcissist occupying an alternate, and disturbing, reality.
