IAFF Corruption: When $630,000 Isn’t Enough

IAFF General President Harold Schaitberger’s annual compensation is at least the equivalent of the combined average pay of fourteen firefighters, staffing for a two-and-one assignment.

Nice work, if you can get it.

In addition, it’s a very poorly kept secret that he lives off IAFF credit cards, charging everything under the sun from speeding tickets to scrabble games.

In 2010, he charged a minimum of $112,000 in fancy dinners and other high-life “necessities.”

But for Harold Schaitberger, even that’s not enough.

“I’ll Take That To Go”

Just like the IAFF district vice presidents, he is also using the travel policy to skim money.

But, his scam is slightly different.

Though he lives on the IAFF credit card, he still puts in for the $80 daily travel per diem when he is on the road, and sometimes even when he’s not.

What kind of a guy treats himself to a $1,000 dinner complete with $100 bottles of wine and then asks for $80 more?

Harold Schaitberger does.

He has even put in for the so-called travel per diem when he was wining and dining at a restaurant you could probably see from the roof of his home in DC.

In 2010, his $80 travel per diems added up to the tidy sum of $9500 while charging at least $112,000 more in goodies.

Unethical, Illegal, or Both?

I’m thinking both.

It’s a blatant double-dip.

In the real world you either use the credit card or take the $80, but certainly not both.

One of Schaitberger’s closest current advisers has said before that “He never leaves anything on the table.”

Schaitberger clearly has an “entitlement mentality” no doubt fueled by his exhibition of the traits of narcissism.

If you are the greatest, you deserve it all, right?

I guess we will see if the US Department of Labor agrees with that.
